Though many use AF, NA, zero proof (ZP), and NoLo interchangeably, only beverages with 0.0% ABV can legally be called alcohol-free in the U.S. Anything under 0.5% ABV—like BrewDog’s Elvis AF—must be labeled non-alcoholic and clearly state it contains less than 0.5% ABV. This technicality reveals the confusing and evolving nature of NoLo terminology, which consumers and producers alike are still navigating.
In Old San Juan, La Taberna Lúpulo is redefining inclusivity with a bold NoLo beer menu. Co-owner Zalika Guillory, Puerto Rico’s first female Certified Cicerone, proudly offers eight NA styles, making space for all guests—drinkers or not. “We want people to know their options without having to ask,” she says.
